They replace the ceiling joists that are removed, and create a structural triangle shape to resist rafter spread. Rafter ties, on the other hand, are very effective for resisting rafter spread, and we often see them added when a homeowner decides to “open up the ceiling” in a living room of an older home to expose the roof rafters and create a cathedral ceiling. Although they are sometimes also used to resist downward pressure that would cause the ridge to drop and the rafters to spread apart at outside ends, they are not very effective for that purpose. The difference between them is that a collar tie is placed up near the ridge beam, but a rafter tie gets installed in the bottom third of the vertical distance from the top plate of the wall to the ridge, as shown in the diagram above.Ĭollar ties, shown above, are installed to resist the separation of the rafters from the ridge beam under a high wind or other unusual lateral load, and are typically placed at every other rafter pair. Both a collar tie and a rafter tie are horizontal connectors between a pair of rafters that meet at a center ridge board across a span.
